At the Intersection of Luxury and Adventure
The design of the Volvo XC70 is all about balancing luxury and rugged capability. Therefore, Volvo made sure their adventure-wagon has a design that encompasses this idea, with the interior luxury that consumers expect, plus the comfort amenities typically found inside a Volvo; two powerful and efficient engine options; and an AWD trim that is more than capable of handling basic off-roading conditions. Will there be rock crawling involved? No, but getting to that fishing spot or hiking trail through the woods has never before been accomplished with style and comfort like this.
Two aspects of the design give away what this vehicle is really meant to be: a stylish adventure-seeking wagon. The front-end with the simple and elegant bumper/grille, and compact headlights paired with stylish running lights, is reminiscent of a luxury sedan. But the way it sits? Athletic and rugged. The stance of this wagon is wide and strong, with the body lifted slightly off the tires. This not only makes it look unique in the wagon world, but also serves a practical purpose, providing better ground clearance when driving over hazardous terrain, along with a more stable platform.
Apart from the front-end, the rest of the 2016 XC70 is deceptively simple. But, the simplistic nature doesn’t prepare the onlooker for the type of comfort that lies inside the cabin. However, it does provide a strong and sleek design with good aerodynamics. For an even more rugged look, aluminum side scuff plates can be added, which will also help protect the XC70 from any debris that might scuff the side of it.

Interior Comfort is Mandatory On A Volvo
With Volvo, having ultimate comfort and plush amenities inside their vehicles is just as necessary as the engine.
In the XC70, the ultimate goal is to keep the occupants as relaxed as possible. The large ergonomic front seats are remarkably comfortable and supportive (which is normal for Volvo vehicles), and the extra leg room is appreciated for taller buyers. A heated steering wheel is a great option for those cold morning commutes, and the standard heated driver/front passenger seats make the cabin even cozier. That’s just the beginning, and the comfort of this vehicle is further enhanced if the Inscription package is tacked on. Instead of simple leatherette material, the seats are now made of rich cowhide leather and the addition of woodgrain paneling brings a whole new air of sophistication to the cabin.
Along with 41.9-inches of generous front legroom, and an impressive 34.6-inches for passengers in the back, the cargo room in this wagon is more than most luxury crossover SUVs out there. With the seats up, there is 33 cu-ft of storage space available. With the 40/20/40 seats folded down, there is a total of 72 cu-ft of storage space. If that’s still not enough, it’s also possible to fold down the front passenger seat for any longer items that need to be transported. Ultimately, the ability to adapt the inside of the XC70 to accommodate whatever needs to be carried is why it has more cargo room than most small luxury SUVs. Also, the versatility to go from 72 cu-ft of storage space to a five passenger vehicle is what makes this vehicle one that fits everyone’s needs.

Powerful and Efficient On-Road Performance
The standard engine for the 2016 Volvo XC70 T5 Drive-E is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. This engine puts out 240 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, which gives this wagon some kick. The EPA-estimated fuel economy for this particular vehicle – which has an eight-speed automatic with FWD – is 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined. Even by today’s standards, that’s still impressive for a five-person wagon with this type of cargo space. Apart from a well designed engine helping the fuel economy, an automatic engine start-stop system comes standard, which automatically shuts off the engine while the vehicle is stopped to save gas.
The second engine option available on the XC70 T5 AWD is a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-5, rated at 250 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. While it might only seem slightly more powerful than the base engine, the turbocharge coupled with AWD put this a few pegs above the base trim level in terms of performance capability. The fuel economy suffers a bit, and now it gets an EPA estimated 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. But, on this trim the XC70 gains light-duty off-roading capabilities, the ability to safely drive in hazardous weather conditions, and an engine with a little more power.

Even though the performance and designs are impressive, Volvo has and always will make safety their top priority – and the XC70 is a prime example of that. Take for example Hill Descent Control, which makes navigating steep and hazardous roads a walk in the park. Simply push a button, and watch as the rough ride turns into a smooth downhill descent. This system prevents spinouts, fishtails, and roll-overs by working with the AWD to provide optimal grip and performance.
Just like Hill Descent Control, Volvo has a host of other safety features that are just as innovative. Primarily, their Intellisafe features. Every Volvo vehicle has these on board, because their goal is to have no serious injuries or deaths by 2020 if a collision occurs.
Some of the more impressive safety features are Driver Alert Control and Lane Keeping Aid. While other cars have versions of these technologies, Volvo took them a step further. The Driver Alert Control function will alert the driver to stop and take a break from driving if it senses inattentiveness behind the wheel, which could potentially indicate drowsiness.
Once alerted, the Rest Stop Guidance Function will kick and and use GPS to help drivers find a safe place to stop. Additional support on the road for the XC70 comes from the Lane Keeping Aid. This system detects if the Volvo is drifting from a lane unintentionally. It’s similar to the warnings found in other cars in this regard, but that’s the only comparison because Volvo made sure its system would self-correct the vehicle and steer it back onto its intended course.
